what a day my son has had!
today started out with church in the morning, which he wasn't to excited about to begin with......after classes, we were invited to a suprise birthday party for the pastor of the deaf church, so we went and had yummy lunch.
While I was chatting/signing with people my son introduced himself a few times, and one of the gentelman gave my son his name sign. Getting a name sign from the deaf community is a great honor, not only is it easier to speak to others once they know your sign (you don't have to spell it each time!) but it is also a way that the Deaf Community shows that you are accepted and "a part" of thier community it was an exciting moment!
Apparently while I was in the bathroom with Samantha, Matthew had a spoken conversation with Jeff Jackson, the Deaf Pastor of the Deaf Church.........you see JJ was born during a time when Sign Language wasn't allowed to be used, and he spent all of his young life being forced to vocalize and learn how to read lips to communicate with people, it wasn't untill his HS or College years that JJ learned and began to use ASL. Because of this he speaks very clearly and well, and he reads lips extreamlty well. Matthew also had a little bit of a conversation with JJ's wife, who doesn't speak as clearly, but has some speech. We finally said our goodbyes and left the church at 4pm!
When we got home the dog was stir crazy, so the kids and I decided to pack a dinner and go to the softball game that members of the deaf church were playing in at the park, and take Bella with us. The game started at 5:10! We watched the first game and I chatted with JJ's wife while the kids played in the grass, of course the grass had red ants in it and of course matthew got bit!
after a trip to the bathroom to wash his hands the crisis had been averted. Fast forward to the end of the game, JJ is standing in front of the bleachers signing about the game's outcome and the next weeks practices and game, and my son's head pops up next to me on the bench and he very loudly exclaims "HI JEFF!!!" its all I can do not to laugh, as I bend over and tell my son that Jeff can't hear him. His little head tilts and a wave of confusion settles over him "what?, he can't hear me?"
"no son, he is deaf" I explain again trying not to laugh at the thought of my son screaming hello to the Deaf Pastor
"but at church he talked to me and I talked to him?" he says with a question in his voice
I then explain that JJ can look at matthews lips and understand him and that he is able to talk as well. "OHHHH!" looking behind us at JJ's wife matthew exclaims "she know's signlanguage, but she isn't deaf" Again I inform him that no she can't hear him, she is indeed deaf. Another look of confusion sets in, but this time it is followed by instant exceptance of the situation. I'm so proud of my multi-cultural, almost bilingual 5 year old!
Fast forward again, we are home for the night and Matthew is in the bathroom and out of toilet paper, his sister brings him some for me while I let the dogs out. I am walking back to the bathroom to check on them and I hear samantha say "you don't have to wipe when you pee, you have a penis" and matthew replies " yeah, and you have a chinese" "yep, I have a chinese" my daughter says. Of course I had to walk in and inquire as to what exactly "a chinese" was? to this samantha promptly points and her vagina and says "chinese!"
"that is not your chinese, that is your vagina" **giggle**
matthew pipes up "But mom you said it was a VaCHINA"
OMG I almost have tears! "no son, not China, VaGina, GGG!"
"OHHHHH!" again with the amazement!
Fast forward 20 min after bed, I go back to check on Matthew and he asks "mom, does God have a refridgerator?"
now its mom's turn to be confused "I don't think God needs a refidgerator, why?"
"well, to put our pictures on!" (duh mom!)
Me-"sure son, God has a fridge for our pictures I suppose, now go to sleep I'll see you in the morning"
"alright, I love you.......I'm sure God has to keep his food cold and stuff"
Me-"I'm sure he does! sleep good, I love you too"
Ahhh a day in the life of a 5 year old boy..........signlanguage, ant bites, china, and refridgerators in heaven...........need I say more?
I love my son!
